Excerpt from "The Story of the Unexpected One"

 

...The wind had picked up considerably, causing small whitecaps to form on the water. Fortunately it was coming straight at him, and he eased the throttle forward and pulled back on the control column.

 

Lord, why did the wind have to pick up? This was to be the smoothest take-off run in the history of flight!

 

He felt every pounding of the floats before they lifted off, but the damage had been done. His gaze shifted from the gas gauges, which were now touching the red, to the village which was just coming into view. Suddenly his heart seemed to stop as he felt a tap on his shoulder.

 

"I don't think we're going to make it," whispered the nurse...
